We were charted in 1983 as an alliterative to the traditional noon Rotary Clubs. At that time each club had an assigned boundary. A member must live or work in the area or the adjoining area. It was decided that this practice was not needed anymore. Therefore the members could come from anywhere.
The original name included Lighthouse since the intended meeting place was to have a view of the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. The proposed location was never built but the name stayed as part of the of club name.
The noon club of Pompano Beach became the sponsor. All of the charter members have since passed on or left the club. However, two others who joined within a year are still members and active. Fred Conrod and John Diehl.
As with most clubs a fast start was had then hard times and low attendance. However, the few would not give up. About 10 years ago a few new members arrived with years of Rotary experience. This helped the club to become a small but mighty in all areas of Rotary. It now has a quality quarterly news letter, an award winning Web site, Public Relations efforts, Literacy Projects of significant, Community Service projects that are recognized, A Scholarship program named for a fallen member and Foundation giving that exceeds pledges. In fact in 2013 the club achieved 100% Paul Harris Fellows. Only 6 clubs in District 6990 can claim that. In the world there are about 2,000.
The club has also been awarded the Presidential Citation seven times and has sponsored it’s first Rotary Youth Exchange student.
Yes, Pompano Beach-Lighthouse is well and active despite its membership of only 14,
our goals are to equip students in Pompano Beach with the educational tools, real world experience, and monetary means to realize their dreams of living a fruitful and successful life. Our core programs include supplying dictionaries for 3rd graders, learning supplies for middle schoolers, leadership training for sophomore students and academic scholarships for graduating seniors.
We're always looking for donations, volunteers, new members and building partnerships to help achieve these goals.
