Welcome

Welcome to Pompano Beach-Lighthouse Rotary Club. We are a small club that would not give up. Chartered in 1983 and seeing big years with 35 plus members and helping the community. Then came the lean years in 1990’s and into the next Century. At one time the roster was down to 8 or 9 with only four attending meetings.

But the members would not give up, a few were added and then a few more and finally by 2008 the club had 24 members. As all Rotary Clubs experienced a few lost interest. But significant projects were added and club became a team of all workers. Currently there are 17 on the roster.

2010-2011 was the best year anyone can remember. A club newsletter has been published  since 2003 and has been honored 5 times. The club received a Community Service award for it’s school supplies project. Each of three Elementary schools received about $1,000 worth of paper, pencils, crayons, glue and book bags. Another project could have been recognized, The Dictionary Project has been done three times, this last year over 1,800 books were given to the third Graders in 14 local Elementry Schools with a total of 86 class rooms. A Grant was requested form the District, so the club receive a little over $1,600 to help pay for the project.

The club also supports The pompano Beach Boys and Girls Club and have almost every year since 1983, SOS Childern’s Village receives 12 gift cards form Target, one for each of the 12 homes, we also help out Tomorrow’s Rainbow.

Several years ago we built a sing for the Paralyzed Veterans Association of Florida. This year it needed painting and replace the sign that became faded form the sun and weather. Magazines and books are collected and given to them on a monthly basis.

The club has qualified for the Literacy Award 3 times and 5 times for the Presidential Citation which is an International Award. This year for the first time this Web site was recognized as the best for clubs under 25 members.

$1,000 scholarships are given each year in the name Kerry McNamara, a Past President who did in a car accident. Money was requested in lea of flowers. 18 have been given since 2003. This coming year we will be sponsoring our first Rotary Youth Exchange student. He will be gong to Denmark.

All this and we have fu too, with several socials including Christmas pot luck in a members home, Christmas Boat Parade in another home, gift exchange at Christmas time and a yearly Awards and Installation Banquet.

We are a favorite for visiting Rotarians, which totaled 192 last year including from outside of the country. The banner collection goes each year by about 10. Currently we have about 190.

We exceeded our Rotary Foundation giving at a rate of 136%.
