Welcome to Pompano Beach-Lighthouse Rotary Club. We are a small club that would not give up. Chartered in 1983 and seeing big years with 35 plus members and helping the community. Then came the lean years in 1990s and into the next Century. At one time the roster was down to 8 or 9 with only four attending meetings.
But the members would not give up, a few were added and then a few more and finally by 2008 the club had 24 members. As all Rotary Clubs experienced a few lost interest. But significant projects were added and club became a team of all workers. Currently there are 14 on the roster.
2013-20134 was the best year anyone can remember. A club newsletter has been published since 2003 and has been honored 6 times. The club received a Community Service award for its school supplies project. Each of four Elementary schools received about $1,000 worth of paper, pencils, crayons, glue and book bags. Another project could have been recognized, The Dictionary Project has been done nine times, this last year 2,448 books were given to the third Graders in 19 local Elementry Schools with a total of 124 class rooms. A Grant was requested from the District, so the club received $2,000 to help pay for the project. Since the inception of the project over 17,000 dictionaries have been distributed.
Several years ago we built a sign for the Paralyzed Veterans Association of Florida. It has since been repainted at the 3799 Andrews Ave in Oakland Park.
A history of the club has been written for the first 30 years.
The club has received the International President's Citation for balanced service and an increase in membership 7 times. 2013 also saw the club achieve the special honor of becoming a 100% Paul Harris Fellow club. Only 6 clubs can claim that in District 6990. World wide about 2,000 clubs.
The club has qualified for the Literacy Award 3 times and 7 times for the Presidential Citation which is an International Award. The Club Web site was recognized as the best for clubs under 25 members.
$1,000 scholarships are given each year in the name Kerry McNamara, a Past President who died in a car accident. Money was requested in lea of flowers. 26 have been given since 2003. A few years ago rwe sponsored our first Rotary Youth Exchange student. He went to Denmark.
All this and we have fun too, with several socials including Christmas pot luck in a members home, Christmas Boat Parade in another home, gift exchange at Christmas time and a yearly Awards and Installation Banquet.
We are a favorite for visiting Rotarians, which totaled 178 last year including from outside of the country.
